Foundation offers $ 5,000 scholarships to artists who have children

 The Sustainable Arts Foundation is receiving applications for a scholarship program for artists with children. The program will offer grants of US $ 5,000 (equivalent to approximately R $ 27,180 at the current rate) for writers or artists who have children who are under age. Enrollment runs until February 26.

This opportunity is not necessarily to study abroad - although the value can be used for that too. According to the foundation, the scholarship is offered without restrictions. This means that the recipients will be able to use the money as they wish. In total, $ 100,000 in prizes will be awarded in the form of 20 grants of $ 5,000 each.

Who can apply

Artists or writers who have at least one child under the age of 18 are eligible for scholarships. According to the foundation, as the award is very popular, candidates must already have a robust portfolio of work at the time of application.

There are no minimum schooling requirements (the portfolio presented is the main selection criterion) or proficiency in English (although the application must be made in that language). The foundation also pledges to give at least half of the prizes to non-white people.

For writers, the categories available for application are:

  • Creative nonfiction;
  • Readers at the beginning and middle of their school life;
  • Fiction;
  • Romance / comic book memory;
  • Illustrated children's books;
  • Illustrated children's books (text only);
  • Poetry;
  • Young Adult fiction.
  • For visual artists, the categories are as follows:
  • Book arts;

For now, the foundation does not accept applications from artists in the areas of performance, video (including scripts) and music (including composition). More information about the categories can be seen here .

How to apply for scholarships for artists with children

Applications for foundation awards can be made through this link . The application process has three parts: personal information, artistic information (what the candidate does, a bit of his history and what he would like to do with the award) and portfolio. According to the foundation, the portfolio is the main evaluation criterion.

Each category has specific requirements regarding the portfolio and, according to the foundation, applications that do not meet these specifications will not be considered. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the requested portfolio presentation formats, which can be seen on this link . Applications must be made by February 26
